Andrew Hunter, the newly named curator of Canadian art at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Veteran curator, artist and historian Andrew Hunter has been named the new curator of Canadian art at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, effective May 1.
Hunter, 49, will succeed Gerald McMaster who, after holding the post since 2005, moved last year to Philadelphia where his wife is executive vice-president of the Please Touch Museum.
A native of Hamilton, educated at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Hunter has been a curator or director at many Canadian institutions including the University of Waterloo Art Gallery, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and the Confederation Centre Art Gallery in Charlottetown.
Most recently, he's been an adjunct faculty member at the University of Waterloo's school of architecture and a principal of DodoLab, described as "an international program of community collaboration and interdisciplinary creative research."
The AGO's permanent Canadian collection, one of the largest in the country, comprises close to 16,000 artifacts.
Correction: An article Monday about the new curator of Canadian art at the Art Gallery of Ontario said Andrew Hunter has been a principal of DodoLand. In fact the name of the collaborative arts program is DodoLab.
