A rare portrait painting by Tom Thomson has sold to a private collector in western Canada for $172,500, including buyer's premium.
The sale of Daydreaming (Portrait of Thoreau MacDonald) was announced Friday afternoon by Toronto-based Consignor Canadian Fine Art Auctioneers and Appraisers, which included the oil among some 230 lots offered for online sale.
Consignor was started earlier this year primarily as a web-based purveyor of fine Canadian art, with Rob Cowley, former chief auctioneer and art specialist with Joyner Waddington's auctioneers, as president.
Daydreaming, a horizontal composition painted around 1914 and featuring the reclining son of Group of Seven member J.E.H. MacDonald, went into bidding with a pre-sale estimate of $200,000-$250,000.
Bidding for Consignor's inaugural online fall sale started Nov. 20 and concluded Friday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
The record for a Thomson sold at auction is $2.75-million, set in late 2009 by Vancouver-based Heffel Fine Art for Early Spring, Canoe Lake (1917).
