Retail maven Bonnie Brooks has been named chair of the Royal Ontario Museum's board of trustees, effective immediately.

Ontario Tourism, Culture and Sport Minister Michael Chan announced the appointment Friday morning in Toronto.

Brooks, 60, vice-chair of Hudson's Bay Company, has been a ROM trustee – one of a total of 21 – since 2010. She will helm the 99-year-old institution through mid-2016.

She succeeds Martha Durdin, chair of the Ontario Arts Council, who was named ROM interim chair in mid-June 2013 following the completion of lawyer Won J. Kim's one-year tenure.

Editor's note: A previous version of this article stated that Won J. Kim's tenure was three years. It was one.
