One of the many TIFF films that re-examines history through a more frank, contemporary lens, this tells the story of Denmark in the late 1700s, when a young, irresponsible king, his beautiful and far more intellectual English queen, and the handsome German doctor they both love (Mads Mikkelsen, known to most viewers as a Bond villain) came together and wound up introducing the Enlightenment values that would transform Scandinavia from a repressive to a progressive society. But not before a lot of beautifully shot and art-directed passion and scheming, sumptuous costume changes and tragic sacrifices ensue.
