Best known for his children's books Crictor and Emile, the artist Tomi Ungerer is one of the most engaging personalities at this year's festival. Originally from the Alsace region of France, Ungerer found his stride as a young illustrator in New York in the late 1950s. However, his highly creative mind also led to producing a series of powerful anti-war, anti-imperial posters and a delectation for drawing erotic art, all of which revelled in crude, often ingenious humour. This dual life as children's illustrator and adult-art progenitor didn't sit well with publishers. He was full-out ostracized from the publishing world and had to slowly regain acceptance as a multifaceted illustrator, one of the most influential of his time.
