In Belarus in 1942, as the partisans fight the German occupation, the decent Sushenya (Vladimir Svirski) is wrongfully accused of sabotage by the Germans and of collaboration by his countrymen, and finds himself hiding in the woods with the man supposed to execute him. With its slowly measured pace, meticulous historical detail and circuitous yet determined storytelling, Sergei Loznitsa's impressive film is relentless in laying bare a complex tale and bitter theme as its characters are overtaken by the moral fog of war.
