This represents Canada's foray into the world previously mapped by the Farrelly brothers, Kevin Smith and Todd Phillips – a world of raunchy chatter, raucous behaviour and ludicrous events, strip clubs, massage parlours, fetish-wear, vibrators and ricocheting sperm. But because it's Canadian, the gross-out factor somehow seems less egregious, more charming, sweet even. At heart, in fact, My Awkward Sexual Adventure is your basic relationship farce, turbo-charged with testosterone. Jonas Chernick (he's also the film's scriptwriter and co-producer) plays Jordan Abrams, a sexually inept accountant/dweeb from Winnipeg who, after getting the heave-ho from his long-time girlfriend (Sarah Manninen), flies to Toronto where he eventually meets Julia (Emily Hampshire), a stripper/lap dancer with a heart of gold, a mountain of debt and culinary ambitions. There's some sharp writing here and the odd smart set piece but insufficient brio to push the preposterousness to the delirious heights of, say, There's Something About Mary.

Sept. 11, 7 p.m., Scotiabank; Sept. 13, 8:30 p.m., and Sept. 15, 9:45 a.m., Cineplex Yonge & Dundas
