Snoop Dogg in the new documentary Reincarnated

3 out of 4 stars

Directed by
Andy Capper
Snoop Dogg

His roll is the same, but Snoop Dogg's role has changed. A feature documentary chronicles the charismatic rapper's pilgrimage to Jamaica, where his decision to record a career-changing reggae album evolves to a full-blown exploration and integration into Rastafarianism that ends up with the artist getting a new name, Snoop Lion. The amount of screen time given to herb smoking (ceremonial or otherwise) is staggering, as is Snoop's collection of Adidas track suits. The biographic film is perhaps too reverential in the way it allows the controversial former street hustler to rationalize his past transgressions, but it does win as a something much more substantial than a simple making-of-the-album doc.

Sept. 8, 9 a.m., Bloor Hot Docs; Sept. 16, 6:45 p.m., Scotiabank.
