Spring Breakers is a terrible, perfect movie. From Harmony Korine, who wrote Kids and made Trash Humpers, nothing can shock. And so he goes for something realer: surprise. Who knew Korine could make something so reactionarily mainstream? And so coherent? The loopy, music-video-like editing alone is sublime. The script is unthinking genius. As for the plot, the plottiest plot yet seen in Korine's practice, it is anarchocapitalism on speed. Four freshman girls, played by Disney princesses Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine, rob a fast-food restaurant to pay for spring break in culturally bankrupt Florida. When they land in jail, wigged-out gangster Alien (James Franco) bails them out; in an increasingly symbolic exchange, they do his filthy work. By the nuclear, neon end, these girls run the world. It's just a world that nobody wants.
