Just when it seemed that nobody cared about the fate of iconic Canadian publisher McClelland & Stewart, a name now surviving as an imprint of a subsidiary of a New York publisher owned by Germans, the blogosphere has added its own distinctive view.
"CanLit is sexy," insists a new, anonymous blog of that title, which advertises itself as "a misguided response to the end of McClelland & Stewart as an independent Canadian publishing house," and in that cause offers what it calls "the finest collection of CanLit pickup lines from the authors themselves."
Examples: A photo of he-man Joseph Boyden, author of Three Day Road, with the caption "Would you two ladies be interested in a Three-Way Road?" A come-hithering Margaret Atwood, author (long ago) of The Edible Woman, asks, "Care to see why they call me 'The Edible Woman'?"
Similar vulgarities abound over three pages of author pictures. But the best caption by far is the one applied to Ann-Marie MacDonald, author of Fall on Your Knees: "This one's too easy," the blogger admits.
