As if he didn't encounter enough real-life horror during his day job as a reporter at Toronto city hall, where he doubles as president of a large and bumptious press gallery, writer David Nickle spends his evenings at home producing even more of it. But the effort has paid off. A previous winner of a Stoker Award for horror fiction, Nickle published his first collection of stories this fall and was rewarded immediately with a starred review in Publishers Weekly. Nickle's Monstrous Affections, published by upstart Toronto publisher ChiZine, is "bleak, stark and creepy," sure to "delight the literary horror reader," PW raved. "This ambitious collection firmly establishes Nickle as a writer to watch," it concluded.

In fact, Nickle is a verteran reporter and columnist with the Metroland group of community newspapers. Compared to what he encounters on a daily basis at Toronto city hall, he says, his own imagination is "a reliable comfort."
