Christian Marclay has won the Gold Lion as best artist at this year's Venice Biennale exhibition.

The California-born Marclay took the juried prize on the weekend for The Clock, his now-famous video/art installation/time piece comprised of thousands of clips from hundreds of films that runs for 24 consecutive hours.

Only six editions of the work, which had its world premiere last fall at White Cube, a London gallery, have been prepared for sale.

One edition was purchased in April by the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa for an estimated $500,000. The NGC plans to show its edition some time next year.

The 54th biennale runs until late November in the Italian city and features work by more than 80 artists from around the world, including Canada's official entry, Steven Shearer of Vancouver.
