A scene from Robert Lepage’s take on Wagner's epic Ring cycle

Some critics panned it, some fans loved it, but everyone was talking about it: Robert Lepage's production of Wagner's Ring Cycle at the Metropolitan Opera in New York featured a beast of a stage that some argued upstaged the opera itself (not in a good way). This documentary follows the superstar Quebec director as he dreams up the stage contraption, brings it to life, and finally brings it to New York – where logistical nightmares ensue. With drama and tension worthy of great opera – and a reluctant diva, too – this documentary offers a wealth of behind-the-scenes revelations on what must have been a harrowing experience for Mr. Lepage, who remains shockingly calm and level-headed throughout. Even if Wagner's masterpiece itself (or opera in general) isn't your cup of tea, you can't help but be gripped.
