Denis Villeneuve

Montreal director Denis Villeneuve's Oscar-nominated drama Incendies has won an audience award at the Rotterdam Film Festival.

Incendies beat out nine other films for the honour on Saturday, including Academy Award-nominated Black Swan and Biutiful.

Festival head Rutger Wolfson said in a statement that one of the highlights of this year's movie marathon was "the attendance by prominent filmmakers," including Villeneuve.

Incendies and Biutiful (of Mexico) are both up for this year's best-foreign language film Oscar, against Greece's Dogtooth, Denmark's In a Better World and Algeria's Outside the Law.

Incendies, about Quebec twins who uncover dark secrets from their mother's past, also recently landed 10 Genie Award nominations, including best film.
