Hot on the heels of its domination last week of the Genie Awards, Monsieur Lazhar has triumphed at this year's Jutra awards honouring excellence in Quebec cinema.

The film, about an Algerian émigré who takes over a class of Montreal elementary school students after their teacher dies, took seven of the nine Jutras for which it was nominated Sunday evening, including best picture, best director and screenplay (Philippe Falardeau) and best supporting actor (Émilien Néron, 13) and supporting actress (Sophie Nélisse, 11).

Vanessa Paradis was named best actress for her performance in Jean-Marc Vallée's Café de Flore while Gilbert Sicotte scored best actor honours for his lead in Le Vendeur.
