Levitated Mass
Rock stars go on tour all the time, but never quite like this. Levitated Mass is a 340-tonne boulder and piece of art by the American land artist Michael Heizer, who is the subject of Doug Pray's documentary (or, dare we say, rockumentary). In 2012, the mammoth stone was hauled around Southern California neighbourhoods as a sort of rolling installation. Whether it is art or not is the question at hand, but, if nothing else, the piece Levitated Mass should not be taken for granite. (PG; Bloor Hot Docs Cinema)
A Thousand Times Goodnight
Juliette Binoche is a deeply embedded war photographer who documents Kabul suicide bombings and, in the process, blows up her own family life back home in Ireland. The sombre drama comes from the Norwegian director, Erik Poppe, himself a former war-zone photojournalist. The hunky Dane – is there any other kind? – Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays Binoche's husband, a long-suffering spouse who's reached his breaking point when it comes to his wife's perilous career choice. Born to Fly: Elizabeth Streb vs. Gravity
"I think my original belief and desire is to see a human being fly." Not a devout believer in what Sir Isaac Newton had to say at all, the extreme choreographer Elizabeth Streb challenges the assumptions of art, injury, gender, aging and human possibility. She's the subject of a documentary from Catherine Gund, the director-producer who attempts to explain this kinetic Evel Knievel of dance. (PG, Bloor Hot Docs Cinema)
Eternity: The Movie
The 1980s go on forever, as does Eternity, a tacky synth-pop duo bent on the big time. This spoofy comedy has fun with the decade of big hair and DeLorean dreams as it chronicles a music act that mashes Wham! with Daryl Hall & John Oates. Probably best seen with a larky bunch of pals – wake them up before you go-go. (14A, Carlton Cinema)
