Hot Docs, the Canadian international documentary festival under way now in Toronto, has proved many things over the past 20-plus years, the most enduring being, perhaps: You can make a doc about damn near anything! To test the validity of that truism, here are capsule descriptions of six documentaries; three are for actual films being shown over the next 11 days; the others are strictly flights of fancy, albeit written in the compressed, poker-faced prose characteristic of Hot Docs programmers. Can you tell the reel – er, real – from the ridiculous? It may make no difference if you can't since what is phony, or at least preposterous, today could become the seed of something factual for a future Hot Docs.
