Some of the greatest superheroes ever are set to do battle in a way that will have very real-world consequences in 2016.

The mega-franchise flicks Captain America 3 and Batman vs. Superman are both scheduled to open on May 6 of that year. Awkward? Oh, yes. But even more awkward is the fact that no one seems willing to back down. "At this time, we are not considering a change of date for Batman vs. Superman," Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros. Pictures, told Bloomberg News.

Fellman also said there is a lot of time between now and the release date. Indeed there is, but who would win the showdown as scheduled? Let's see how these franchises compare.

Star power

Captain America 3

Chris Evans as Captain America. Other cast details are not available, although it’s safe to assume Scarlett Johansson will return as Black Widow.

Batman vs. Superman

Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Ben Affleck as Batman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

Box office dominance

Captain America 3

The first two Captain America movies have pulled in more than $678-million in international box office.

Batman vs. Superman

Can anyone even count how much money these two heroes’ films have made over all time? The real superhero is the calculator that can add that sum.

Marketing boost

Captain America 3

The next Avengers movie comes out May, 2015.

Batman vs. Superman

It’s Batman vs. Superman!

Villainous appeal

Captain America 3

No word yet on who the villain might be.

Batman vs. Superman

Jesse Eisenberg as Luthor. Could be amazing, could be even worse than Kevin Spacey.

And the winner is ...

Batman vs. Superman is going to destroy Captain America 3. The DC Superteam probably couldn’t best The Avengers, but the third instalment of Cap? It’s no contest.
