In the photos of Fred Herzog, now 80, scenes and moments from Vancouver a half-century ago burst into vivid, contemporary life.

A German war orphan who made his way to the West Coast in 1953, he went unrecognized for a long time because he used Kodachrome slides at a time when "art" meant black and white.

But recently, interest has bloomed just like his colours: A billboard will appear at Homer and Granville streets in May as part of a cross-Canada project by the Contact photo festival.
