Two weeks after the surprise announcement that he would be stepping down from his position as president of the Banff Centre, Jeff Melanson is to be named chief executive officer of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on Thursday morning.

Melanson will remain at Alberta's Banff Centre through September. He announced his resignation on April 10, citing personal reasons – his three children live in Toronto with their mother. "My kids need me, and I need to be with them," he told The Globe and Mail at the time.

In the wake of Melanson's resignation, the board of the Banff Centre says it remains committed to implementing its 2013 strategic plan, which calls for an ambitious, $1-billion rebuild of the arts institution.

"The board is disappointed to see Jeff leave but understands the personal matters driving Jeff's decision and acknowledges that his tenure has set an exciting direction for the Centre," said board chair Brenda Mackie in a statement.

Melanson was appointed president at the Banff Centre in 2012 after holding leadership positions at the National Ballet School and the Royal Conservatory of Music Community School, both in Toronto.

Roberta Smith has been interim CEO of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since the retirement late last year of long-serving president and CEO Andrew Shaw.
