"I was met on the road by a face I once knew, shapeless was his frame and his colours were few."

The distant indie-rock adventurer Damien Jurado, last heard as a guest voice on Moby's Innocents album from earlier this year, emerges out of the shadows with the spooky new single Silver Timothy.

The opening acoustic strums and easy Latin groove recall an old song from Shocking Blue, with Jurado singing in a hushed tone as he sets the controls for the heart of Venus.

It picks up psyche-rock steam as it grows forward, with synthetic squiggles on top. "Go back down, don't touch the ground" is the small, softly contradictory chorus that leaves things in a state of suspension. Where to next? To be continued; Jurado's full album, Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son, lands on Jan. 21.
