Hideaway by Kiesza; streaming at kiesza.com

If we believe Hollywood, naval forces have a history of recruiting stunning women. Rihanna was a gunner's mate second class in Battleship, while Demi Moore wore dress whites well as a lippy lieutenant commander in A Few Good Men.

And while the Calgary-born, New York-based singer Kiesza is no longer with the Royal Canadian Navy, she has torpedoed her way to the top of the British charts with her electro-bleeping, ear-catching hit Hideaway.

The beats throb insistently like a nineties dance-hall hangover and Steve Winwood's Higher Love is vaguely recalled. Kiesza's voice is hard and throaty (even on her punchy oohs and ahhs) as she sings about escape and the pleasures of a dream lover: "You're just a feeling … not even I can't find a way to stop the storm … oh baby, it's out of my control."

Smooth sailing from here, then, for the new star Kiesza.
