King Krule, from the forthcoming 6 Feet Beneath the Moon (True Panther/XL)

The music press (especially the British contingent) is diligent with its hype, but when it comes to young Archy Marshall, the "new voice" tag is particularly spot on. Marshall, the Londoner who works professionally as King Krule, has a wide-mouthed growl he uses to stretch vowels every which way – something like Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon, especially given that the sparse alt-rock instrumentation at work is reminiscent of the Leon rulers' earliest efforts. "Same old bobby, same old beat," the 18-year-old Marshall snarls street-wise, "well they got nothin' on me." Precocious, angsty and with a rapper's swagger, he makes it all look easy, as the best ones often do. – Brad Wheeler
