It's About Time

  • Terry Clarke
  • Blue Music Group

Blessed with a style that blends unfussy virtuosity with an inherent sense of swing, any recording featuring Clarke is going to be about time. The joke is that this marks the 65-year old drummer's first album as a leader, making him the oldest debutante in jazz. Drawn from live performances featuring bassist Don Thompson and guitarist Jim Hall along with, variously, saxophonists Joe Lovano, Phil Dwyer and Greg Osby, the music is intimate, expressive, and wonderfully subtle, from the lithe pulse of Hall's Say Hello to Calypso to a cerebral romp through All the Things You Are. Here's hoping Clarke doesn't make us wait as long for the follow-up.
