Lewis, the DeLorean of romantic singer-songwriters, proves that the best way to be found is to first be lost.
The artist known as Lewis is alive and well and living we don't know where. Earlier this year, Seattle-based Light in the Attic Records rereleased L'Amour, a languorously stylized album from 1983 marked by the tremulous murmurs of an obscurity named Lewis, the long-gone DeLorean of romantic singer-songwriters.
After the LP's rapturous reception from the indie-music press, a second album surfaced: 1985's Romantic Times, to be reissued Aug. 26. The recording is credited to Lewis Baloue, rumoured to be a Calgarian. Now the label has finally tracked down the man himself, in Canada. Respecting his privacy, the location of Lewis (who goes by the name Randall Wulff) has not been revealed.
In a statement released by the label, Wulff, found lounging at a coffee shop, said he doesn't want any money from the reissues, and is working on new material. "I'm not looking into coin," he said. "I'm just strumming my guitar." More is to come, then, from an artist who proves that the best way to be found is to first be lost.
