Robin Dann to open for Martha Wainwright with Bernice project

Robin Dann, who works as "Bernice” will open for Martha Wainwright

The tags on Bernice's Bandcamp website are "pop dream" and "indie songs" and "Toronto" and "weird." Which comes as close to nailing down the music of Robin Dann's Bernice project as one would need to. Dann's Bernice first gained notice in 2011 with the sublime adventure in soulful synth pop, What Was That. More recently, Dann has signed with the Arts & Crafts label and has released, as Bernice, the single St Lucia. Produced by Grammy Award winner Shawn Everett, the springy, busy R&B track features Dann's airy vocals and questions the origins of one's peculiarities. "The song works as a reminder to myself of all the women in my family who've lived before me," Dann writes, in a news release. "I wonder 'what of me is you?'" Dann, the daughter of a symphony harpist and a former TSO principal violist, has a gig next week opening up for Martha Wainwright, whose mother was Kate McGarrigle, the folk-music icon. It would seem these two would have something to talk about. Bernice (opening for Martha Wainwright), Nov. 23, 7 p.m., $29.50, Mod Club. 722 College St., Bernice (with Rallidae), Dec. 5, 8:30 p.m., $8 to $10, Burdock Music Hall, 1184 Bloor St. W., 416-546-4033.
