Stratford Festival’s Brian Bedford pulls out of The Merchant of Venice for health reasons

Longtime Stratford Festival star Brian Bedford is pulling out from this season's production of The Merchant of Venice for health reasons.

The Ontario theatre company announced Tuesday that Bedford, set to play Shylock in artistic director Antoni Cimolino's production, is "suffering from a medical condition, which, though treatable, requires immediate attention."

Scott Wentworth, currently receiving strong reviews as Tevye in the festival's production of Fiddler on the Roof, will take Bedford's part in the play.
