Anna Wallner and Kristina Matisic met while working in TV news in Vancouver in the nineties. But they found their stride with shopping rather than journalism, creating the TV series The Shopping Bags, which became the anchor for a little media empire. Their new show Anna & Kristina's Beauty Call premieres Tuesday on W Network at 9 p.m. Each episode features a $500 makeover. A poor man's What Not to Wear? No way, says Wallner, as the show also offers useful beauty information. For example, did you know that the right eyebrow shape can knock 10 years off your face?
How much can you really do with $500?
More than I thought. I'm really trying to focus on completing outfits. We tend to go top, bottom, shoes. That's just the beginning. It's at that point that somebody with style really stands out. It's how you accessorize.
Do you ever feel like you've got nothing to wear?
Always. Maybe not always. Often.
Is there a lost item of clothing or accessory that you've rediscovered in your closet since you've started this series?
Yes - a belt. It's my new favourite thing. I am belting everything. I don't care whether it's officially in or out according to the fashion magazines. I've rediscovered belts.
Anything you've thrown out since starting this show?
Yes, a geometric pleated miniskirt that I just loved when I bought it about seven years ago and kept saving for that time when I might want to wear it again. But it's gone. It's too short for my 40-year-old legs.
