Bob Log III, a drone-blues singer-guitarist who wears a motorcycle helmet and a glam-era jumpsuit, plays at the Horseshoe Tavern on Sunday.

Bob Log III

Only a maniac would cross Mississippi Fred McDowell with Evel Knievel, but these are desperate times. The going has gotten weird and the weird has turned pro, which brings us to Bob Log III, an idiosyncratic drone-blues singer-guitarist who wears a motorcycle helmet and a glam-era jumpsuit and who encourages female audience members to dip certain body parts in his glasses of Scotch. Drink up. Aug. 14, 7:30 p.m. $13.50. Horseshoe Tavern, 370 Queen St., 416-598-4226 or collectiveconcerts.com.

YouTube FanFest

If you've got the click, they've got the bait. After the success of last year's debut event at Yonge-Dundas Square, the YouTube FanFest has moved to the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre. Appearing in the flesh there are such online heroes as comedian Lilly Singh, science-explaining duo AsapSCIENCE and the a cappella specialist Mike Tompkins. Promoters originally planned to charge admission, but they've since decided to make it a free event. Never let it be said that the YouTube generation doesn't get what it pays for. Aug. 13, 7 p.m. Free (advance tickets recommended). Molson Amphitheatre, 909 Lake Shore Blvd. W., 855-985-5000 or ticketmaster.ca.

The 39 Steps

Our theatre critic rarely gives weather-based advice, but apparently one is motivated to make an exception during this particularly gruelling hot stretch. In his review of a parody of the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock thriller – "the theatrical equivalent of a beach read" – The Globe's J. Kelly Nestruck praises a free-wheeling production that "delivers enough loosey-goosey laughs in an air-conditioned environment to send you home happy and cool as a cucumber." Ah, sweet relief. To Aug. 27. $35 to $96. Young Centre, 50 Tank House Lane, 416-866-8666 or soulpepper.ca.

case/lang/veirs

With their eponymous debut album, the star-studded trio of Neko Case, k.d. lang and Laura Veirs make a strong case for the lower case. The singers came together on the suggestion of Canada's lang, who e-mailed the others to say: "I think we should make a record." Within 30 minutes, Case and Viers both replied affirmatively. The result is a folk-rock collaboration of opinionated lyricism, golden vocals and natural imagery – harmony with a capital H.

Aug. 16 and 17, 7 p.m. $54.45 to $64.70. Danforth Music Hall, 147 Danforth Ave., 855-985-5000 or ticketmaster.ca.

Jews on a Roof

Groucho Marx quipped that he didn't care to belong to any club that would have him as a member, but he was a proud member of the Jewish comedic fraternity. That rich heritage will be on display at a one-night festival of chutzpah or whatever other funny Yiddish you choose to use. Performers include the hilarious Jon Steinberg and Sheba Mason, who, as the love child of playwright Ginger Reiter and Borscht Belt comedian Jackie Mason, uses humour to discuss her absent father and a contentious paternity suit. It's her shtick. Aug. 14, 8 p.m. $24.99 to $69.99. Regent Theatre, 551 Mt. Pleasant Rd., 416-834-8654 or jewishcomedyfestival.com.
