It's that time of year again: season-announcement season. Over the past few weeks, we've heard about what's coming up in 2011-2012 at Toronto's Canadian Stage (Atom Egoyan directing Martin Crimp!), Theatre Calgary (Antoni Cimolino directing the Canadian premiere of Enron!?!) and the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (world premiere of Grumpy Old Men: The Musical!?!?!?!), to name just a few.

There will be plenty more seasoning in the next month, but here's a taste of a couple of upcoming mouth-watering announcements that I've caught a whiff of ahead of time:

  • Toronto will finally get a production of Margaret Atwood's The Penelopiad thanks to Nightwood Theatre. Artistic director Kelly Thornton will direct the large, all-female cast (not yet chosen) and the show will open in January of 2012.
  • The Rocky Horror Show will be one of the first shows at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton next fall. Leigh Rivenbark will direct the cult musical, which will open in previews a couple of days before Hallowe'en 2011.

What Canadian theatre's 2011-2012 season are you most anticipating so far?
