Rod Beattie as Walt Wingfield

Shout it from the mountaintop: Theatre Calgary and Regina's Globe Theatre have revealed their 2013 – 2014 seasons.

Indeed, among the intriguing productions soon headed to Calgary is the Canadian premiere of The Mountaintop, Katori Hall's play about Martin Luther King – an American-penned script that won the Olivier award for best new play, but was later snubbed at the Tony Awards. As he did with Lucy Prebble's Enron, Theatre Calgary artistic director Dennis Garnhum is once again taking a gamble on an imaginative play that was rapturously received in London, but less so in New York.

Also on the Theatre Calgary playbill: An adaptation of the great American novel, The Great Gatsby, directed by Siminovitch Prize winner Kim Collier; Soulpepper Theatre Company's production of Ins Choi's hit play, Kim's Convenience, and Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara, in a new production directed by Garnhum that will also play at Carey Perloff's American Conservatory Theater – the latest in a long line of Canadian co-productions with that respected San Francisco theatre company.

Meanwhile, in Regina, the Globe Theatre's season will begin and end with musicals directed by Max Reimer, former – and final – artistic managing director of the Vancouver Playhouse. The Last Resort – a music-filled mystery penned by prolific Canadian playwright Norm Foster with composer and lyricist Leslie Arden – opens in September, while classic Man of La Mancha concludes the playbill in April.

In between, Dan Needles's ever-popular stockbroker-turned-farmer Walt Wingfield – played by actor Rod Beattie – will return with his show, Lost and Found; David French's Canadian classic Salt-Water Moon will be revived under the direction of Regina's Judy Wensel; and four new Saskatchewan plays will premiere as part of the Shumiatcher Sandbox Series.
