Area of Expertise

I specialize in evidence-based research on healthy aging, cancer care, mental health and emerging therapies.

I have lived in Vancouver for 20 years, but my family roots are in Nova Scotia, dating back to 1748. From the age of 5, I studied the cello for 17 years in Ottawa, Cleveland and Montreal until injuries put an end to that calling. My journalism career began with an internship at the Montreal Gazette. I freelanced for magazines and then worked as a magazine editor before joining the Globe as assigning editor of an arts and entertainment supplement called Vancouver 7. Then I discovered my niche: health reporting. Combing through medical research requires rigour and attention to detail – qualities I associate with my classical music training. I drill down to find the highest quality evidence I can, because I know how confusing and contradictory health news can be.

Why did you become a journalist?

At age 22, working reception at CHOM-FM Radio, "Montreal's Home of Rock and Roll," I found myself coveting the newscaster's job.
