Renata joined The Globe and Mail's Toronto newsroom in March of 2011. Raised in the Greater Toronto Area, Renata spent nine years reporting in Alberta for the Calgary Herald and the Edmonton Journal, covering crime, environment and political affairs. She was part of a team that received a National Newspaper Award for its coverage of the slaying of four RCMP officers in Mayerthorpe, Alta. She also co-wrote an investigative series on workplace deaths that was nominated for a Michener Award for meritorious public service journalism.

Renata studied journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto, returning to school to finish her bachelor’s degree in 2014. She travels to Alberta regularly, spending time at her old coal miner’s house in the mountains west of the Cowboy Trail.
