Bank of Nova Scotia’s chief financial officer, Sean McGuckin, is taking a leave of absence to attend to a family illness.

In his absence, the bank’s chief accountant, Rajagopal Viswanathan, will serve as acting CFO.

Canada’s third-largest bank announced Mr. McGuckin’s leave Wednesday morning, a day after the company reported second-quarter earnings. The bank did not set a timetable for his return.

“Our thoughts are with Sean and his family at this time,” said Brian Porter, Scotiabank’s president and chief executive officer, in a statement. He added that the bank’s board and management have “the utmost confidence” in Mr. Viswanathan.

Scotiabank has also promoted two other executives who will report to Mr. Viswanathan during his time as acting CFO. Charles Edmond becomes executive vice-president of finance, having most recently served as co-head of global investment banking. And Chadwick Westlake will become senior vice-president of structural cost management and Canadian banking finance. Previously, Mr. Westlake was senior vice-president of structural cost transformation and lean.
