Mounties say four people have died and six people were hurt in a highway crash in southern Alberta.

RCMP say a pickup truck and a passenger van collided Friday morning on Highway 36 near Taber, about 260 kilometres southeast of Calgary.

Both drivers and two passengers in the van were killed.

The driver of the pickup was a 31-year-old man from Saskatoon, the driver of the van was a 26-year-old man from Camrose, Alta., — the dead passengers include a 25-year-old man from Edmonton and a 29-year-old man from Medicine Hat, Alta.

Police say their names will not be released.

Two passengers sustained life-threatening injuries, one is in serious condition and the remaining three passengers sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Solar energy company Belectric, which is building a plant in the area, says one of its construction crews was involved in the collision.

Police say they continue to investigate.
