A man is dead after a natural gas leak in southern Alberta.

Emergency crews were called to a rural property north of Turner Valley, southwest of Calgary, shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday.

The man was declared dead at the scene.

RCMP say he was digging in a field when he was overcome by gas after rupturing a distribution line.

Emergency medical authorities say a second man was in the area at the time, but was not harmed.

The gas leak was contained and authorities say there was no danger to surrounding properties.
