WORLD WAR II Canada Forces in Italy (ADVANCE) BATTLE FOR ITALY—Sept, 3 marks the 20th anniversary of the landing of troops from the 1st Canadian Division at Reggio on the toe of the Italian boot during the Second World War. The capture of Ortona on the Adriatic during Christmas week, 1943, ended the first stage of Canada's part in the defeat of Italy. Second stage started with the advance by the 1st Canadian Corp up the Liri Valley from Cassino in May, 1944, culminating with the June 4 capture of Rome. The Canadians then fought through the late summer, autumn and early 1944-45 winter months in the northern Adriatic sector of the peninsula. They were withdrawn from Italy in February, 1945, joining the formations of the Canadian Army in Northwest Europe. (CP Newsmap
