The Globe and Mail

Changes to commenting at

The Globe and Mail recently launched an update to its comments system as part of an ongoing upgrade to give readers a more robust forum for debate and discussion. We've heard from many readers that they would like more options for our comments on article pages, and these changes aim to offer better tools for conversation.

  • Choices for social sharing: Readers will have the ability to link their account with their Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts for frictionless sharing of comments.
  • E-mail notifications: Readers will be able to opt-in to e-mail notifications, so they can get a an alert when another reader posts a reply to any of their comments.
  • Moderation: The upgrade will provide better filtering to prevent comments with offensive language, personal attacks or unsubstantiated allegations from being posted.
  • More control over your comments: Readers will be able to delete any of their previous comments, no matter how long they’ve been posted

To implement these changes, older comment records need to be streamlined. Readers will continue to read and post comments on stories within recent months, where the vast majority of comment activity happens. Comments on older stories may not be immediately available.

We hope to continue to roll out changes to improve the commenting experience for our readers. On Aug. 23, The Globe and Mail's Public Editor Sylvia Stead and Senior Communities Editor Jennifer MacMillan took your questions about comments. Read the full transcript below.
