Public editor: A good example of The Globe’s new corrections policy

Newspapers and websites don't just offer news and features to their readers, they offer services readers need in their daily lives. Stock quotes, weather forecasts, whether schools will be open or closed, are all important to the readers and must be correct.

A correction in Tuesday's paper is a good example. A story on Monday (online and in the paper) reported that there would be no games played by the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursdays in the new shortened NHL season. The reporter made this error by misreading a news release and it was not caught and fixed by editors.

Leafs season ticket holders were quick to e-mail Globe editors pointing out the error.

So it was necessary not just to say that a story was wrong, but to fully correct the error and to explain which Thursday nights the Leafs will be playing at home: Jan. 24, Jan. 31, Feb. 21, Mar. 28, Apr.4 and Apr. 18.

This is part of The Globe and Mail's new corrections policy, which provides greater clarity on what information was wrong, where the error occurred and what is correct.
