The 2016 McLaren 570S is calling out the venerable Porsche 911 Turbo and other established players in the $200,000-ish sports car segment.
Signature feature
On paper anyway, it's very much a purist's sports car: mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, ultra lightweight. The carbon-fibre tub that forms the basis of the passenger compartment weighs just 80 kg, while the entire car reportedly weighs only 1,313 kg (dry weight). As a result, McLaren claims the 570S will have the best power-to-weight ratio in its class.
What else is new?
The 570S is the first car in McLaren's entry-level Sports Series, which will eventually include several other models, including a more affordable 540C. There will likely be convertible "spider" variants of both of those in the near future too. The 540C and 570S slot into McLaren's rapidly growing lineup under the 650S and 675LT — which make up the Super Series — and the range-topping P1 hybrid supercar.
Under the hood
Twin-turbo V-8 goodness, just as you'd find across the rest of the McLaren lineup. The 3.8-litre engine is essentially a de-tuned version of the motor from the 650S. Power output is 570 PS, which translates to 562 horsepower. To slow it all down, carbon-ceramic brakes will come as standard. The sprint from 0-100 km/h takes just 3.2 seconds, but the Porsche Turbo S has the McLaren beat by 0.1 of a second. Chalk that up to the 911's use of all-wheel drive.
When can we buy it and for how much?
There's no official Canadian pricing yet, but expect to pay about $200,000. Orders are open now, while cars should hit showrooms this winter.
