The 2016 Ford Explorer revealed at the L.A. Auto Show on Nov. 18, 2014.Matt Bubbers

What is it

2016 Ford Explorer: A mid-life refresh for Ford's popular Explorer SUV, on the occasion of the nameplate's 25th anniversary.

Signature feature

Even more high-tech options and luxury features for a vehicle already bursting at the seams with gadgets, because apparently customers just can't get enough of 'em. So, you can now get front- and rear-looking cameras, each with a little washer to keep winter grime off the lens. Seriously. There's a lot more too, but expect to pay extra for most of it.

What else is new

This may just be an update for the current Explorer, but it's a key product in the company's portfolio. Some 23 per cent of Ford sales are utility vehicles, and they expect that figure to grow.

Ford also unveiled a new luxury Platinum trim for the Explorer, meant to compete against the likes of GMC's Denali and premium brand SUVs.

Under the hood

The big news here is that the 2.0-litre EcoBoost is becoming a 2.3-litre with 270 hp and 300 lb ft of torque. For the first time, you'll be able to get this model with all-wheel drive.

When can we buy it, and for how much

The price for all models is jumping up by about $1,000 across the lineup. The base model will start at $32,499 while the new, luxury Platinum V6 AWD model starts at a lofty $57,999. The new Explorer will arrive in summer 2015 as a 2016 model.

Cool quotient: 1/5
