The Hyundai Intrado unveiled at the Montreal auto show on January 15, 2015.Mark Hacking

HYUNDAI INTRADO

What is it?

The Hyundai Intrado, a concept crossover that foreshadows a change in design direction for the South Korean manufacturer.

Signature feature

The exterior design. This was the first Hyundai produced under the watchful eye of Peter Schreyer, the company design chief who previously revamped the look of Kia and, before that, made a name for himself at Audi. The Intrado also set the stage for the Hyundai Santa Cruz truck concept that turned heads at this year's North American International Auto Show.

What else is new

The blistering orange-and-carbon-fibre interior is minimalistic, purposeful and aggressive, with an ultra-wide, chunky steering wheel and toggle switches to control the electric windows. The carbon fibre structure of the vehicle is designed to save weight and offset the bulk of the battery pack.

Under the hood

A hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain linked to a 36 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Filling the tank with hydrogen provides an expected range of 600 km.

When can we buy it, and for how much?

Sadly, you can't buy the Intrado. But you might soon be able to buy a Hyundai that incorporates design elements from this burly crossover. Also, drivers in Vancouver can soon lease a Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell, with a similar powertrain and a reported range of 425 km.
