This is the look of a modern Jeep and it works. Mike Manley, president and CEO of the Jeep brand, said: "Jeep Cherokee boasts a new design, a nine-speed automatic transmission and two advanced engines, class-leading off-road capability from three innovative 4x4 systems, more than 70 available safety and security features, and a host of new technology features."

2014 Hyundai Equus

This looks like a good take on the future of luxury cars. Hyundai isn't planning to be a big volume player in luxury cars – yet. But the updates to the Equus speak volumes about the brand-building exercise going on at Hyundai. The upgraded Equus has a new instrument panel, better wheels, a tweaked exterior and loads of technology, from a 12-inch digital cluster to a power door closure.

The fourth-generation Nissan Pathfinder SUV uses an adapted hybrid system lifted from the Infiniti M Hybrid. "The new system used in the 2014 Pathfinder Hybrid serves as the natural evolution from conventional internal combustion powertrains to the wider adaption of hybrid systems," said Nissan Canada's head of planning, Tim Franklin. "With its compact packaging and light weight design, it is ideal for use in family vehicles such as the Pathfinder where interior passenger and cargo space are critical – and where the system's design preserves the same abundant amount of space offered by the conventional Pathfinder."

The four-door mid-size coupe comes from a mould similar to that used with the CLS 63 AMG. Maximum power is rated at 360 hp and a peak torque of 331 lb-ft. This represents "the world's most powerful four-cylinder engine built in series production," and combined fuel economy is 6.9 litres/100 km.

2014 Acura MDX

The new MDX rides on a completely new platform, carries up to seven people and Acura boasts of improved ride comfort, a more versatile and luxurious cabin, increased fuel efficiency and enhanced dynamic performance. Dave Gardner, vice president of sales and marketing, Acura Canada, pointed to the "Nürburgring-tuned dynamics" and "thoughtful interior" to highlight the changes.

2014 Kia Soul

Kia calls the Soul its "most iconic people mover." The new Soul has a new chassis (stiffer, longer and wider) and the interior will be quieter, says Kia. Pricing will be announced closer to the Soul's launch date in the third quarter of this year, but Kia Canada marketing director Robert Staffieri made no bones about the company's high hopes for the next Soul, noting engineers and designers focused on "making the Soul a joy to drive."

The third-generation Highlander is a critically important model for Toyota. The mid-size SUV segment is filled with interesting new entries. To compete, Toyota has an all-new exterior design, three-row seating for up to eight, an array of standard features, a host of available in-cabin technologies, and increased cargo capacity. Power choices include a V-6 with a new six-speed transmission and a V-6-powered Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain.
