Mastercraft Ceiling Bicycle Lift

  • Available at: Canadian Tire
  • Price: $29.99

A garage is supposed to be where you park your car. Not where bikes are dumped. Ceiling hooks to dangle bicycles from are great, but not for the vertically challenged who can't reach or are not yet strong enough to hoist a bike over their heads. An inexpensive bike pulley system not only solves the problem, but provides a lesson in physics.

The Mastercraft Ceiling Bicycle Lift is lightweight yet sturdy, and easy to install. The directions are more like cave drawings but patience and a power drill will get it installed quickly.

The handlebars and the seat are hung on large rubber-coated hooks that are suspended from the pulley. Pulling on the cord raises the bike to the roof and the braking mechanism on the cord prevents the bike from lowering expectantly.

However, explaining how the five wheels on the pulley creates a mechanical advantage to reduce effort is wasted on the kids. They only care that they can lift the bike to the ceiling using one hand on the rope. Who cares if the science is lost? The bikes are out of the way and you have your parking space back.
