Proto SkyHook

  • Available at: Acklands-Grainger
  • Price: $173 for one wrist-strap unit

Before you go crazy on the price, consider situations that might qualify the expense. What if you're tinkering on your prized 1951 Jaguar MK and the wrench slips from your greasy hand to ricochet off pristine engine parts before lodging in a tight squeeze? Or maybe you're nose down-butt up working in the Cummins engine of a massive Peterbuit and the wrench tumbles through the engine to the dirty pavement.

Either way, wouldn't a system that stops you from losing the tool be useful?

Manufacturers of safety tethering systems such as Proto and Snap-on build industrial-strength lanyard systems that start with wrist bands that attach to the tool.

While the Snap-on system clips your wrist to the tool using a snap-hook, Proto has a quick-release system so you can switch from one tool to another quickly. The unique clip on your wrist is duplicated on your belt, so the tool is released to a secure spot where it won't fall away.

Maybe your 1996 Honda Accord doesn't warrant the expense and duct tape with an old bungee cord will work. However, those lucky enough to own a classic or repair engines for a living might want to protect themselves from costly slip-ups.
