Hi Rob,

I recently watched a program about car prices, and how to cross check them so you don't get fleeced. They mentioned the Canadian Black book as a reference for pricing.

Is this a publication you would suggest? I'm in the market for a new car and I would really like to know that the pricing I receive is honest value.

Thanks, John in Mississauga

Although the Canadian Black Book is one resource, it's a little thin on vehicle pricing.

I would suggest purchasing a copy of the Canadian Red Book. You can order it online for $16.95.

This publication gives you the following information:

  • SRP (Suggested Retail Prices)
  • Wholesale values
  • VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) listings
  • Provincial Value conversion charts - very useful if you are considering buying a vehicle from rust-prone provinces.
  • Optional equipment charts
  • Information about every auto maker, from Lamborghini to Yugo
  • Odometer tables - used by car lots to help set used or leased car prices

John, your research shouldn't stop there. You should also consider manufacturer web sites and incentives. You can also cross-check pricing against Globe Drive's new car search and other online car search sites and classified ads.

Take your time and investigate your region's dealers. Let them know you're motivated but also tell them that you are comparison shopping. Never take the first deal, no matter how good it sounds. Thank them and move on. You can always go back if indeed, this offer turns out to be the best.

Oh, and during the negotiations, ask them to throw in some accessories. Cargo liners for SUVs, a trailer hitch and wiring, floor mats, and transmission coolers are all good items to consider asking for.

I don't know about you John, but I love shopping for a vehicle. I have fun with it because visiting various dealers gives you a sense of how different dealers care for their customers. You never know, you might get lucky like I did and discover a great dealer with fantastic customer service.
