The cheapest way to reduce road noise in your minivan

2010 Honda Odyssey

Honda

'I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey EX-L and I expected a bit of road noise from it, but not this much, especially on the highway. I recently changed the tires to Hankook Optimo H727 (factory size), which promised a quiet ride but there has been no difference after the change. Is there anything else I can do to limit or reduce road noise?" – Mo in Waterloo, Ont.

The trouble with vehicles that have a big open interior is the difficulty in eliminating road noise, most of which originates with the tires.

The only approach I know of, other than changing tires, is to apply sound deadening material in obvious areas, like the wheel wells and under the floor. This can be done in two ways – spray-on or cut to fit. A top-quality body shop would be able to do both. You can also try it yourself, but be prepared for skinned knuckles.

You can spray the wheel wells from the outside, but that application will be less successful and wear off. The best way is to access the same area inside by removing seats, carpets and a whole lot more. It is a lot of work and will not completely solve the problem. Have you tried turning up the audio system?
