Mitsubishi

2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution

Base price: $41,998

The Evo is as close to a clone of the WRX STI as is possible, given these two come from different auto companies. The EVO has not been as fastidiously updated as the Subaru, which in part reflects Mitsu’sincreasing devotion to fuel economy and electric drive vehicles. It’s fast and fun, though, and worth a back-to-back test with the WRX STI.

Volkswagen

2013 Volkswagen Golf R

Base price: $39,675

VW Canada has sold out its allotment of the Golf R which, like the Evo and the WRX STI, represents an all-wheel monster of a compact car. This version of the Golf R had a 256-hp turbo four, which is shy of both the Subaru and the Evo’s 291 turbo horses. VW will launch an all-new version of the Golf later this year, so let this serve as a warning: Company types say they’ll bring in more Golf Rs, perhaps 500 or more. If you want one, get on the list.

Volvo

2014 Volvo S60 T6 R-Design Platinum AWD

Base price: $56,600

This Volvo is more refined and more city-friendly than the Subaru, the Evo and the Golf R. It is, however, a reasonable option if you think the other three are too harsh, too rigid, too rough and too much to live with day-to-day. Don’t underestimate the Volvo’s abilities. It won’t eat race tracks, but it’s entertaining.

Review: Volvo a good alternative to the dominant German sedans
Mercedes-Benz

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG AWD

Base price: $49,800

Merc has built a road warrior – this is an awesome toy, especially in the hands of a skilled river. The ride can be stiff, but we can say that of the Subaru, the Evo and the Golf R. The design makes a statement and the car is loaded with features.
