Mercedes-Benz dominated the World Car awards Thursday, winning three — including World Car of the Year for the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The C-Class beat the Ford Mustang and Volkswagen Passat to claim the top prize, announced at the New York International Auto Show. "The C-Class is a best seller that has always been a trendsetter in the premium medium-size category" said Dieter Zetsche, head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. "It embodies what we understand modern automotive luxury made by Mercedes-Benz to be and has all the prerequisites to be a huge success. Accordingly, we are extremely delighted of winning the honour of World Car of the Year." The Mercedes AMG-GT was named World Performance Car and its S-Class Coupe captured the Luxury Car award. The Citroen C4 Cactus won Design of the Year while the BMW i8 was named top Green Car. The winners of the 11th annual awards were selected by a panel of 75 international automotive writers. Vehicles must be available for sale on at least two continents. The Audi A3 scored the top prize in 2014. The 10 finalists for 2015 World Car of the Year (also seen in this gallery) were announced in February at the Geneva Motor Show. It was narrowed down to three finalists in each category Thursday. Dozens of international motoring journalists, including Globe Drive contributor Michael Bettencourt, each selected their choice in a secret ballot.
