Men, of course, never grow up. Or at least they never grow up beyond the age of 12, which explains the enduring success of the Jim Carrey movie Dumb and Dumber and why I could not help but snigger at the potty-humour potential of the GoPilot.
GoPilot? It's a portable urinal for travellers. I am not joking. Go to their site, or Amazon or eBay, and you'll see it's available for $29.99 (U.S.). Invented by gynecologist Dr. James Kolter, the GoPilot is… Well, do I really need to go on?
Absolutely, I do. Instead of commenting on electric cars or privacy issues associated with in-car communication devices, or reviewing the latest sports car, or digging into Deals of the Week, today I get to write about the GoPilot. Here we have a contraption that looks a little like a small, hand-held vacuum cleaner. You can surely understand why. And yes, there is a separate attachment for the female user. Dr. Kolter is a gynecologist, after all.
The site includes a link to a brief infomercial featuring Dr. Kolter in full explanation mode. One thing he points out is that the little grey bag in which the GoPilot travels – discretely – can double as a kind of shield or blanket for the GoPilot user. Make sure you pull over to the side of the road at this delicate moment, we're also warned. We would not want any driver distractions.

I learned about the GoPilot through a media release sent to me by someone named Staci. She promised to send me "images or samples for your review" if I felt the urge, so to speak. I or course did wonder about what sort of images she planned to send.
"The GoPilot is an essential take-along for any road trip – long or short – providing a safe, secure and discreet way to avoid a bathroom break emergency," notes the release.
Honest to goodness, I am not making this up. More proof that truth is stranger than fiction.
